If you’re looking for an occupation that enables you to closely link scientific knowledge with the challenges of working in a leading international company, the combination of a bachelor’s degree and vocational training at Bayer is the ideal program for you. This course combines practical training as a chemical laboratory assistant or technician with chemistry studies at university culminating in a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) or Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) degree.
The background:
The inventor company Bayer requires highly skilled employees for its research and development activities. Together with pharmacists, biologists and other chemists, chemistry bachelors at Bayer search for new pharmaceutical active ingredients or innovative polymers, or develop environmentally friendly production processes. The goal is always to translate the results of scientific research into innovative products.

Your personality
You are prepared to work hard to achieve your personal objectives. The training as a chemical laboratory assistant or technician at Bayer plus chemistry studies running partly in parallel will require a firm commitment and a high level of expertise. When you begin your career, you will also need a pronounced sense of responsibility. Your strengths include both self-initiative and the ability to work in interdisciplinary teams, as well as an excellent understanding of technology and physics.

Program (new format 2010)

First stage: vocational training and university studies (two years)

  • Training: chemical laboratory assistant or technician
  • Study: Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) or Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.)

The first two years comprise the first part of a vocational training course at Bayer, leading to qualification as a chemical laboratory assistant or technician. At the same time, you start studying for a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) or Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) degree at Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences in Krefeld. You spend three days a week training at one of the Bayer sites in Dormagen, Elberfeld, Leverkusen or Uerdingen. Studies at Niederrhein University take place two days a week. During the university vacation period you attend on-site trainings the full  week.

Second stage: vocational training and university studies (5th - 7th semester)

  • Training: chemical laboratory assistant or technician
  • Qualification as a chemical laboratory assistant or technician
  • Study: Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) or Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.)

You spend up to five days a week at the university and up to two days a week training at one of the Bayer sites. Starting in the fifth semester, you can choose from additional courses offered by Niederrhein University in management methods, leadership and languages. During the university vacation period you attend on-site trainings  the full  week. The final exams culminating in qualification as a chemical laboratory assistant or technician are taken at the Chamber of Industry and Commerce. The payment of training allowance stipulated by the relevant collective bargaining agreement will end after finishing the vocational training.

Third stage: Bachelor thesis
Following the exams at the Chamber of Industry and Commerce you begin studying full time. Your bachelor thesis, which may be on a Bayer-specific topic, begins in the eighth semester.
Degree: Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) or Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.)
